American embassy building completes 50 years
New Delhi (PTI): The iconic American embassy chancery building here, which is witness to the growing ties between India and the US over the last five decades, on Monday celebrated its 50 years.
The magnificent building, which remains an outstanding example of Indian-American collaboration in design and craftsmanship, was opened on January 5, 1959 in the presence of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
"It is an important preservation building worldwide which has been pictured in the American archives of historic buildings in America's diplomatic service," US Ambassador David C Mulford said addressing a gathering which also included Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
"I am optimistic that the building will remain a significant symbol of friendship between the two countries," he said adding that the in the last five decades, the relations between the two countries have improved remarkably.
Describing the building as an important landmark in the national capital, Dikshit said in the last couple of years Indo-US relations have grown manifold.
She said the historic India-US nuclear deal has brought the two countries close to each other.
Dikshit said the magnificent building bears testimony to the transformation of India-US relationship over the decades.
Several diplomats and staff at the embassy were present at the function where a photo exhibition figuring prominent Indian and US leaders was also put up.
