Goa sought PM's intervention on water projects with Karnataka

New Delhi (PTI): Goa has sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention to stop Karnataka from going ahead with its "disputed" projects for diversion of water from Mandovi basin to Malaprabha basin and demanded the setting up of a Water Disputes Tribunal to resolve the standoff, Rajya Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

"A delegation, led by the Goa CM (Digamber Kamat), met the Prime Minister on January 7 this year and submitted a memorandum to take an immediate action to stop Karnataka from proceeeding with the construction of disputed projects for diversion of water from water deficient Mandovi (Mahadayi) basin to water surplus Malaprabha basin," Union Minister of State for Water Resources Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav informed the Upper House.

Goa also demanded an immediate setting up of a Tribunal for resolution of the dispute as per its previous request made in this regard in July 2002, he added. Yadav was replying to a question whether the Goa Chief Minister met the PM recently in connection with the dispute between Goa and Karnataka over sharing of Mandovi river water.

Yadav stated the ministry of Water Resources had given an "in-principle" clearance to the proposal of Karnataka government for diversion of 7.56 TMC water from Mandovi basin to Malaprabha basin through implementation of Kalasa and Bhandurinalla schemes to meet the drinking water needs of Hubli and Dharwad cities in 2002.
