Ten members of wedding party killed in mishap

Malda (PTI): Ten members of a wedding party were killed and two others critically injured when their vehicle collided with a stone-laden truck at Kaluadighi near Malda in the early hours on Thursday.

The speeding truck hit the vehicle of the wedding party from the rear, moments after the smaller vehicle hit another stationary truck on NH-34, Additional Superintendent of Police, Malda, Kalyan Mukherjee said.

The injured including the driver and a four-year-old boy were admitted to Malda Sadar Hospital where the condition was stated to be critical, police said.

Mr. Mukherjee said the 12 residents of Samsi village near Ratua in Malda district were returning home after attending a wedding reception in Kaliachak.

Police and rescuers extricated the bodies by cutting the mangled vehicle this morning.

The driver of the lorry fled after the accident, police said.
