Don't give political colour to judicial issue: Musharraf to lawyers
Karachi, May. 5 (PTI): Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf today accused the country's lawyers of politicising a judicial matter by holding protests against suspension of Chief Justice Iftikhar M Chaudhry and said they would not succeed in their designs.
"They (lawyers) are trying to give political colour to a judicial issue and I warn them that they would not succeed in their designs," Musharraf told a public really in Tharparkar town in the southern Sindh province, close to Indian border.
"The people should not pay heed to them," he said while adding that "people of Pakistan will not support their political plans. I warned them to shun politics, be peaceful and let the Supreme Judicial Council to decide the matter."
He also defended his decision to file a judicial reference against Chaudhry insisting it was was legal and according to the country's Constitution. "I say now let the judiciary decide the matter. The reference was correct."
Musharraf last night also told a gathering of government officials at a conference on Tax Administration Reforms Programme here that the reference against the suspended Chief Justice was a serious one.
Musharraf said he enjoyed good relationship with Chaudhry and would welcome any decision regarding presidential reference by the Supreme Judicial Council.
