    Nepal Communist Party-UML slams Prachanda

Kathmandu, July 18 (PTI): The Nepal Communist Party-UML has slammed CPN-Maoist chief Prachanda for his remarks seeking inclusion of Maoist cadres in the police force to provide security during the November 22 Constituent Assembly polls.

"These are not only irresponsible and irrelevant remarks made by Prachanda to induct party cadres into the security agency but a ploy to foil the constituent Assembly polls," CPN-UML Publicity Committee chief Raghuji Panta said.

Maoist chief Prachanda had recently proposed that cadres of the Young Communist League (YCL), Maoists youth wing, be integrated with the Armed Police Force to provide security for the Constituent Assembly polls.

Prachanda's remarks came in the wake of the government's plan to recruit 80,000 temporary police personnel to provide security for the polls.

No party cadres can substitute the police force which belongs to the state, Panta said. If the Maoists want to involve their cadres in the poll security then why not the youth cadres of other parties such as Democratic National Youth Union of CPN-UML and Tarun Dal of Nepali Congress be included in the security mechanism? he asked.

Prachanda's plan to include the Maoist cadres into the police force during polls are directed towards derailing the entire election process, he alleged.

Meanwhile, Prachanda has accused the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) of trying to reduce the number of combatants in the cantonments in Chulachuli cantonment by 40 per cent.

The allegations came in the wake of remarks by Ian Martin, chief of the UN mission in Nepal that Maoists are not willing to discharge disqualified combatants from the cantonment sites.

Earlier, the Maoists and the government had signed a deal agreeing to discharge all combatants under 18 years of age and those who were recruited after May 2006 deadline.
