Russian expert on Vedas dead
Moscow, Sept. 5 (PTI): A prominent Russian scholar on India and ancient Vedas, Prof. Tatiana Elizarenkova, died here today at the age of 78. She was suffering from cancer. Prof. Elizarenkova was awarded with Padma Shri in 2004 for her outstanding literary and educational activities.
A scholar at the Oriental Studies Institute of the Russian Science Academy, Prof. Elizarenkova had authored many tomes on ancient India including the Russian translation of Rig-Veda, published few years ago.
Before her death she had completed the translation of Atharva Veda and was preparing for its publication. Indian Ambassador to Russia Kanwal Sibal has expressed profound grief at Elizarenkova's sad demise.
Elizarenkova had authoritatively claimed that Rig-Veda was written on the territory of modern Russia before Aryan migrated to the India, Iran and Europe. Her claim was substantiated to some extent after the burial mound of an ancient warrior was uncovered in the Voronezh region south of Moscow in Russian heartland as the slain warrior was buried exactly in accordance with the Vedic rites, described in Rig-Veda, Russian archaeologists say.
