Palestinians name road after Rajapaksa
Colombo (PTI): The Palestinians have named a road after Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to signify his steadfast commitment to their cause over the past 30 years.
In a letter to President Rajapaksa, Anwar H Al-Agha, Ambassador of Palestine to Sri Lanka, said: "I am happy to announce that in the Municipal Council of Beitunia it has been decided to name the road housing the Sri Lanka Mission, in your honour, for the dedicated services rendered by you to the Palestinian cause during the last 30 years."
The road was opened on Rajapaksa's 62nd birthday on Sunday. The year also coincides with completion of his government's two years in office here.
The Ambassador expressed his warm and heartfelt greetings to the President on his birthday and hoped that "under your able guidance Sri Lanka will see an era of peace and prosperity."
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been a long standing champion of the Palestinian cause, and has headed the Sri Lanka-Palestine Friendship Association for many years.
Palestinians have been operating a diplomatic mission in Colombo for several years.
