Karuna to be deported to Sri Lanka

London (PTI): Karuna Amman, a former Tamil Tigers leader, jailed here for entering Britain on a forged visa and diplomatic passport, will not face further charges here and will be deported to Sri Lanka soon, the Crown Prosecution Service has said.

45-year-old Karuna whose real name is Vinayagmoorthy Muralitharan, has been accused by human rights groups of forcing teenagers to serve as child soldiers, torturing prisoners and killing hundreds of civilians.

He was released from prison on Friday after serving three months for immigration offences and would soon be deported to Sri Lanka, the CPS said.

After his release, he was transferred to a Home Office detention centre. His wife and children live in London.

The war crimes unit of the Metropolitan Police has been probing into allegations against Karuna since before Christmas.

Karuna broke away from the LTTE in 2004 and was arrested here in November last year for travelling on a diplomatic passport under a false name.
