Death toll rises to 14 in south China's tropical storm
Beijing (PTI): The death toll in the last week's tropical storm Fengshen which struck south China's Guangdong province has mounted to 14 even as heavy rains continued to lash the city, triggering landslides and forcing cancellation of flights. At least 14 people have died till now and another nine are missing, local authorities said.
Fengshen, which means "God of Wind", had brought downpour and caused the rivers to swell in most part of the country's industrial powerhouse Guangdong after hitting the province's economic boom city of Shenzen on Wednesday last. Although the tropical storm had left Shenzen, strong rain continued to pound the city yesterday, triggering landslides and forcing cancellation of flights, stranding passengers, official Xinhua news agency said.
The rains affected 340,000 people, destroyed more than 1,200 houses and inundated more than 640,000 hectares of crops, a provincial flood control headquarters spokesman said.
Fengshen moved northward to Jiangxi province on Thursday noon and downgraded to a tropical low pressure storm, the agency said, adding, it was continuing to move northeastward.
Hundreds of people were dead or missing in the Philippines after Fengshen hit the country last week.
