'Israel does not take orders from Obama'

Jerusalem (PTI): In an unusually harsh criticism, an Israeli Minister on Monday said the Jewish state "does not take orders from Barack Obama" after the US President renewed support for the Annapolis agreement and the stalled roadmap plan for Israeli-Palestinian peace.

Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan of the Likud party also praised hardliner Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who last week said that Israel was not bound by the 2007 Annapolis talks.

"In voting for [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu the citizens of Israel have decided that they will not become the fifty first US state," Erdan, who is incharge of coordinating between the Knesset and the cabinet, said.

He, however, said that "Obama is a friend of Israel and the United States is an important ally, and everything between us will be decided through communication."

The Israeli foreign minister had earlier said he accepts only the three phase "road map" peace plan as the basis for peace talks with Palestinians and not the resolutions passed at Annapolis conference because they were not ratified by the Israeli parliament.

The 'Quartet' of UN, US, EU and Russia mediated "road map" plan and called upon Israel to stop settlement activities and dismantle illegal outposts while asking Palestinians torein in on terror infrastructure during the first phase of the plan.
