Village in Tamil Nadu attempts to replicate BPO success
Chennai, May 6 (PTI): Kizhanur, a nondescript village about 52 kms from Chennai, is pioneering an attempt to replicate India's success on the BPO front -- now confined to a few cities -- into an agrarian model.
Under the aegis of Lason India Ltd, a leading BPO in the country, Sharmila, a 24-year-old woman in the village, has converted three rooms of her house into a small BPO unit to handle legal publishing works for Lason's clients in the United States.
"When they (Lason officials) told me about the exciting possibility, I got interested," Sharmila says. Besides, this will also help in providing jobs to the unemployed people in the village, she told a group of visiting reporters.
Sharmila is employing 14 people, 10 of them girls, who have an educational qualification of plus-two or above, for legal transcription work at the BPO, which started in March this year.
"For the first two months, our officials trained the staff on the job. Now, the unit is producing excellent results, both in terms of productivity and quality," said Pradeep Nevatia, Managing Director, Lason India.
Lason is seeing this agrarian model as the future of BPO industry in India, as the units in cities are faced with high attrition rates and low-employee satisfaction.
"BPO and India are made for each other. However, to continue our success in BPO front, we have to take the outsourcing story to the villages," Nevatia said.
