54 CP activists held for snap protest
Kolkata, March. 6 (PTI): A total of 54 activists, including four girls, of the students' wing of Congress were today arrested for staging a protest in front of the state secretariat to demand action against a police officer who allegedly shot dead a party activist in Burdwan district.
The slogan shouting demonstrators of Chhatra Parishad who gathered outside Writers' Buildings held posters that criticised the "unjustified" police action and demanded action against the officer-in-charge of Katwa police station, Debojyoti Saha.
Congress activist and lecturer at a law college Tuhin Samanta was shot dead during the government committee election at the Chanduli High School near the sub-divisional town in Burdwan district on February 25.
The Congress claimed that Saha had kicked Samanta and "fired from his service revolver" resulting in Samanta's death.
The State Government had already ordered an inquiry into the shooting incident.
