Orissa: Traffic restored
Rourkela, April 20 (PTI): Traffic, paralysed for three days on two different national highways passing through Sundargarh district, started rolling again after the blockades set up by agitators at three different places were lifted last night, official sources said.
The people, supported by activists of different political parties and trade unions, had launched the 'rasta roko' on Monday to protest against the dilapidated condition of the NH-23 and NH-215 which resulted in frequent accidents.
The blockade ended after the district authorities conducted negotiation with the agitators and assured that work on the two NHs would commence in the first week of May next by using the available funds.
An allocation of Rs. 8 crore would be sought subsequently from the Central Government for the purpose, the officials said.
The blockades had been set up at Kalta and Tensa on NH-215 and at Rajamunda on NH-23.
It was also decided that 10-wheeled trucks, transporting minerals in the area, would be allowed to ply on the highways only between 8 pm and 8 am.
