Kerala: Law to protect traditional fishermen planned

Kochi, June 4 (PTI): The Kerala Government will enact a new law to protect traditional fishermen from the trawling ban, Kerala Minister for Fisheries and Registration, S Sarma, said.

The minister was speaking to mediapersons after a meeting he had with various organisations in the fisheries sector at the guest house here on Sunday.

The Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on June 6 will discuss the issue, he said.

Sarma said the Bill will be introduced in Assembly in the coming session itself.

The objective of the state government in bringing the law was to ensure protection to the traditional fishermen, who had been fishing during trawling ban period for the last 10 to 18 years, he said.
