LDF recommends judicial probe into land scam

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 30 (PTI): In a setback to Kerala Public Works Minister T U Kurvila, the ruling LDF today announced a judicial probe into the land scam allegedly involving the Minister's family members.

The liaison committee of the ruling Front, however, left the question of his continuance in the cabinet to Kuruvila's party Kerala Congress (Joseph).

After a LDF meeting, its convener Vaikom Viswan told reporters that the Front wanted the government to seek the services of a sitting High Court judge for the probe.

Kuruvila has been in the thick of a controversy over a land deal allegedly involving his children at Rajakumari village in Idukki district.

The deal involved purchase of 50 acres of land meant to be transferred to an NRI businessman for setting up resort in the hilly area close to Munnar. However, the deal could not be completed as it allegedly involved irregularities.

The businessman later complained that he was cheated in the deal and alleged Kurivila's family had taken a sum of Rs 6.75 crore as part of the agreement.

Pressure for Kuruvila's resignation mounted after preliminary examination of the documents by District Collector Raju Naryanaswamy found irregularities in the deal.
