Two Tripura airports to be made operational

Agartala, Oct. 4 (PTI): As part of India's Look East Policy, two airports in Tripura would be revamped and made operational soon, officials said here yesterday.

The two airports are located at Kailashahar in North Tripura district and at Kamalpur in Dhalai district.

The North Eastern Council (NEC), the planning body for the region, has already provided funds for the purpose to the Airport Authority of India (AAI), they said.

There are 22 airports in the entire North Eastern region but half of them are not in use. At least 12 of them would be made operational by the end of 2008, the officials said.

As many as 11 companies have evinced interest for starting dedicated regional air services for the Northeast under the regional airline permit notified by the ministry of Civil Aviation in August.
