Advocates in TN abstain from work
Chennai (PTI): Lawyers in Tamil Nadu on Friday abstained from work to protest the November 23 serial bomb blasts in Uttar Pradesh, bringing to halt the functioning of courts across the state.
The boycott was complete in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and else where in the state as advocates struck work following a call given by the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu to observe the day as a "protest day".
A group of advocates led by R C Paul Kanakaraj, President Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA), took out a silent procession within the court premises, paying homage to blast victims and also carried placards condemning terrorism.
Another group of advocates led by All India Bar Associations' vice chairman S Prabakaran, wearing black badges, observed two minutes' silence to pay homage to the departed souls.
About 800 advocates of the Madras High Court bench in Madurai and nearly 2,000 advocates of the district court took part in the boycott, the bar association said.
Reports from Coimbatore said that over 2,200 advocates in the district boycotted court proceedings.
Explosions inside court premises in three cities of Uttar Pradesh on November 23 had left 15 persons, including four lawyers, dead and 80 others injured.
