CPI(M) retains Balagarh assembly seat
Balagarh (WB) (PTI): CPI(M) has retained the Balagarh (SC) Assembly constituency in Hooghly district as its candidate Bhuban Pramanick was declared elected in the by-poll today, but with a significantly decreased margin.
Pramanick defeated his nearest rival Asim Majhi of Trinamool Congress by 8,410 votes, Election Commission sources said.
However, CPI-M MLA Dibakanta Rauth - whose death necessitated the by-election - had won the seat in 2006 by a margin of nearly 18,000 votes.
While Pramanick polled 60,101 votes, Majhi secured 51,691 votes. Bangshi Raut of the BJP got 8,833 votes leaving Congress nominee Biswanath Malik in the fourth place with 5,864 votes. Gautam Mandal of the CPI(ML) managed 4530 votes, the sources said.
Balagarh - a CPI(M) stronghold ever since the Left Front swept to power in 1977 - went to polls on December 29, when 84 per cent voters had exercised their franchise.
