Mizoram takes measures to mitigate famine: Lakhera
Aizawl (PTI): Mizoram Government has taken all measures to mitigate the lot of rural people who are in the grip of famine as a sequel to the periodic bamboo flowering and unprecedented heavy monsoon during last year, Governor Lt General (rtd) M M Lakhera said here on Saturday.
In his speech on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the Republic Day, Lakhera said that besides 'mautam' or gregarious bamboo flowering, extremely heavy monsoon disrupted communication network, causing floods and landslides, apart from loss of lives, devastation of crops and dwelling houses.
He thanked the centre for providing help to the state government in this time of disaster.
The governor said that Mizoram had achieved a lot during the past few years in many sectors saying, "I feel most exhilarated to announce that mizoram has the distinction of having achieved the first position in literacy with 89.42 per cent."
He said that the state remained peaceful and cognizable crime decreased by 7.12 per cent during last year.
Many people, including students attended the official function of the celebration of the Republic Day here despite heavy showers and cold wave that gripped the state since the past two days.
