    Tanks in Madurai full following heavy rain

    Madurai (PTI): Almost all the tanks in Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Theni districts were full following continuous rain for the past three days, officials said.

    The crop damage due to flooding was under investigation and a correct picture would emerge only after the assessment by the local village revenue officials.

    "As of now we can only say thousands of acres of crops are under water when they are ready for harvest.Paddy, chilli,vegetable fields are inundated.If the waters recede a part of the crop could be saved" they said.

    The Coutralam falls in Tenkasi was in torrent and locals as well as tourists were banned from taking bath in the falls.

    In Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district Pirandaikulam tank had breached. But the other tanks in the district had reached full level,and were overflowing through the vadikal (exit sluice.)

    The vaigai dam level touched 62.34ft(Max71ft)with an inflow of 2296 cusecs.The discharge from the dam was maintained at 41 cusecs.The periyar dam level stood at 118.80ft(max136ft)with an inflow of 3452cusecs.There was no discharge from the dam.

    The rainfall recorded in mm in the 24 hours ending 0803 hrs today:Periyar 19;Thekkadi 43; Shanmuganathi 71;Uthamapalayam 63, Veerapandi 26; Maruthanathi 22; Manjalaru 34; Sothuparai 24; Peranai 30; Kallanthiri40; Chittampatti 19; Pulipati 15.
