Auto-rickshaws to go off road for three days in Mumbai

Mumbai, Apr 21 (PTI) Approximately seven lakh auto-rickshaws across Maharashtra would go on a three-day-long strike beginning on Monday to protest against the introduction of electronic meters.

"We will go on a strike from midnight on Monday and we expect about 14 lakh drivers (two drivers per auto working in two shifts) across the state to join us and stay off the roads," Head of the Mumbai Auto men's Union, Sharad Rao told PTI.

The strike was being held to protest against the state government's proposal to introduce electronic meters on auto-rickshaws which has been done without any consultation with them, Rao said.

"The meters are as prone to tampering as the existing mechanical ones and in many ways are more delicate since they are prone to damage due to dust and moisture," he said.

The union has also alleged that despite an assurance to take them into confidence before taking a decision, the government has not consulted or met them on the issue.

In the country's financial capital, the auto-rickshaws operate in the western and eastern suburbs and are a popular mode of public conveyance in other parts of the state also.

"We will also think in the coming days if the strike should be extended further," Rao added.
