Deadlock over Food Security Mission in LDF meet

Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): Discussion on the proposed Food Security Scheme meant for self-sufficiency in food production in Kerala was deadlocked on Tueswday with CPI-M and CPI leaders airing different views on the mode of funding for the project at the ruling LDF meeting here.

CPI leaders opposed the idea of taking funds from Agriculture and Animal Husbandry departments handled by their ministers and suggested that funds could be diverted from Local Self-Governance and General Administration departments.

With CPI sticking to its stand, CPI-M leaders argued that the committee formed to guide the implementation of the scheme by these departments did not mention spending of funds from the departments. The committee's recommendation was only to supervise the implementation of the scheme by them.

The meeting ended with no decision being made on the matter. With Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan leaving for Delhi to visit ailing CPI-M leader Harkishen Singh Surjeet, the meeting which was to continue tomorrow had been cancelled, Front sources said.

LDF convener Vaikom Viswan later told reporters that the meeting ended in a cordial manner and all other versions were just `media creation.'
