Mobs torch vehicles for not fulfilling their demands

Rajkot (PTI): Nearly two State Transport (ST) buses and a couple of Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) vehicles in the city were torched by mobs from Dalit community for not fulfilling their demands of renaming the newly constructed Zonal office, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occured late Tuesday night at the Ring Road area here.

The crowd also pelted stones against the patrolling police team, they said adding no one was injured in the incident.

However, no arrest has been made so far, police said.

The BJP ruled Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) decided to name the newly constructed Zonal building after BJP's late leader Chimanbhai Shukla, following which the community had been protesting and thereby demanding to rename the building after Babasaheb Ambedkar.

When contected RMC Standing Committee Chairman and BJP city unit President, Nitin Bhardwaj said, "The main building has been identified as Ambedkar Bhavan, since the corporation formed and denied to replace the name."

The decision to give newly constructed Zonal building at RMC Perisar was taken unanimously in RMC general meeting on Tuesday, he added.

Meanwhile, police have beefed up security arrangement in the Dalit dominated area to avoid any untoward incident happening again.
