J&K employees protest over fuel price rise

Srinagar (PTI): Police used water cannons to disperse protesters and detained at least 30 state government employees agitating here against the recent fuel price hike.

Hundreds of employees assembled at the Jehangir Chowk to demand rollback in prices of petrol and diesel. They were led by chief of the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) Abdul Qayoom Wani.

The EJAC also demanded regularisation of services for those employed on daily wages, raising the retirement age to 60 years and release of salary to public sector employees.

Police arrested Wani but he said the agitation will intensify. On Monday, about 50 people were detained outside the civil secretariat.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday condemned police crackdown on the employees. It said the government must constitute a committee to negotiate with the employees.

They party also demanded sales tax exemption for petrol and diesel.
