Goa Govt. to present report for greenfield airport

Panaji (PTI): The Goa government will formally present a report on Monday to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking his nod for a greenfield international airport at Mopa in North Goa.

This would be the second airport in the tourist state, which is already equipped with an international airport at Dabolim.

"I will be presenting the report requesting for the airport at Mopa to the Prime Minister," Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat told PTI.

The international airport at Mopa ran into controversy after a certain section of politicians including the then Member of Parliament Churchill Alemao opposed the project.

Worries were raised that the Mopa airport will force closure of existing Dabolim airport, which will adversely affect the tourism industry in South Goa.

Alemao, in his extensive campaign, had laid allegations that Mopa project, tucked on Goa-Maharashtra border, would be more beneficial to neighbouring state than Goa.

Kamat stated that the state government is of the opinion to retain and expand existing airport even after having a greenfield project at Mopa.

The committee, constituted by the PM, headed by Kamat to look into feasibility of the airport, on May 30, had given its green signal for the Mopa airport.

The CM-led committee had based its conclusion on the findings of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which had stressed the need for additional airport for the state due to increasing air traffic.

Kamat said that he would submit the report prepared by the committee to the PM, who will take further stand on the issue.
