Jorhat (PTI): Altogether 56 persons were taken ill after eating food supplied by a fast food joint at two birthday parties in Jorhat district of Assam on Saturday.

Official sources said here that the food poisoning was suspected to have been caused by mayonnaise rolls supplied at the two parties.

The food was supplied by the same restaurant at the parties held in the Mission Hospital and North East Institute of Science and Technology campuses on Saturday afternoon.

All the 56 affected people were admitted to Jorhat Mission Hospital where the condition of 12 was reported to be serious, hospital sources said.

The district food inspector has collected samples for testing.

The restaurant has been sealed by the district authorities and its owner has agreed to bear the cost of treatment of the affected people, the sources added.
