Teacher's death evokes noisy scene in assembly
Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): The Kerala assemby on Monday witnessed noisy scenes over the death of headmaster of a primary school in Malappuram district during a violent stir by Muslim Youth League protesters who were demanding withdrawal of a controversial seventh standard social science text book.
While the UDF opposition members accused the government of 'prejudging' the incident, ruling LDF alleged that James Augustin, headmaster of MLP school at Vallipuzha, was 'killed' by the agitators on July 19, near school at Kizhissery, when he went there to attend a meeting.
The issue was raised in the house by P Jayarajan (CPI-M) who said Augustin who went to attend a meeting of teachers at Kizhissery was murdered.
Jayarajan also wanted opposition leader Oommen Chandy to own the moral responsibility for the incident and tender apology to the people in the state.
Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said the opposition was trying to term Augustin's death as a 'natural one' and not connected with violence. It was very unfortuante, he added.
Referring to the UDF's demand for judicial probe, Achuthanandan said 'let the police investigation continue. After that, if there was any complaint, 'we can have CBI probe or judicial probe', he said.
