UDF opposition walks out over police action
Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): Congress-led UDF opposition in Kerala on Tuesday staged a walkout in the Assembly alleging that the CPI(M) was encouraging its feeder outfits SFI and DYFI to indulge in violence against UDF workers.
Seeking leave for an adjournment motion on the alleged attack on Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Congress offices in Kannur and Kozhikode by SFI and DYFI activists, IUML leader C T Ahammed Ali said the violence took place in front of the police.
Alleging that the violence had the blessings of CPI(M) leaders, he asked the party leadership to rein its cadres. The attempt of CPI(M) to suppress its political opponents with violence would not succeed, he said.
Replying to the notice, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said violence would be dealt with firmly. Police would do everything necessary to maintain peace. A meeting of IUML and CPI(M) leaders in Kannur have been called to work out peace process, he said.
Before staging the walkout, opposition leader Oommen Chandy said faith of people in police has eroded.
