32 discos operating illegally in Bangalore closed down

Bangalore (PTI): Amid protests over the ban on playing of live music and dancing at pubs in the city, police today raided and closed down 32 discotheques which were "operating illegally."

The discos were operating without a legal valid license, Bangalore Police Commissioner Shankar Bidari told reporters here on Monday.

The discos, as per rules, had to possess license that were on par with those of 'live bands.'

Police were enforcing the 1130 pm deadline following complaints and for hotels, the rule had existed for long, he said.

On protests over strict rules on playing music at the eateries, he said that these joints were permitted to play recorded music but the management had to ensure that the volume was not too loud.

On Sunday, people belonging to various walks of life including members of the film, art, music and fashion industry, as well as disc jockeys employed in the city, staged a protest against the police imposing a ban on playing of live music and dancing at pubs.
