72 arrested for involvement in betting racket

New Delhi (PTI): Seventy-two people have been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly running a betting racket in the national capital.

Acting on a tip off, a police team raided a building in New Osmanpur in the city on Thursday and arrested the 72 persons including 11 account keepers for their involvement in the racket, a police official said.

Police also recovered Rs 8,250, one calculator, mobile phones, 100 'satta' slips from the possession of the account keepers.

The official said the racket was run by a lady called Pushpa and another notorious satta "kingpin" in association with Salim Garagewal and Jaikaran, who is the owner of the premises from where the racket was run.

Police began probing the matter on the basis of a tip off that large scale betting was being organised by Pushpa and her associates in New Osmanpur.

Subsequently a team to investigate the matter was formed under close supervision of ACP of North East district Ramesh Malik.

The team conducted a raid at the said premises and apprehended the account keepers engaged in writing Satta and 61 other persons for their involvement in betting, the official said.

On sustained interrogation, the account keepers allegedly told the police that they were working in the gambling house on commission basis on the direction from Pushpa.

The persons who were involved in the betting were lured to get return as high as 80 times against their investment, police said.

Police alleged that Pushpa and her associates are connected with Mutka King of Faridabad, Kishan Ganj, Gandi Galli Fatehpuri and Ghaziabad.
