Imphal (PTI): The kidnapped son of Manipur Health Minister Pheiroijam Parijat has been rescued by the Assam Rifles personnel from Bongjang village in Senapati district, official sources said on Friday.

Pheiroijam Okenjeet (26), son of Parijat, was kidnapped at gunpoint from the minister's residence at interior Nongada area in Imphal East district on Wednesday night by militants of Kangleipak Communist Party-Military Council (KCP-MC) who demanded a ransom of Rs 20 lakh, the sources said.

Following the abduction, Assam Rifles' 23rd battalion started a search operation at Bongjang area after being tipped of that Okenjeet had been taken to that village, sources said.

In the meantime, a caller who identified as a member of KCP-MC rang up Minister Parijat who was at his official residence here on Wednesday night and demanded the ransom.

As communication between kidnappers and family was on, Assam Rifles personnel rescued Okenjeet on Thursday.

The sources said the kidnappers fled on seeing the Assam Rifles personnel.

Okenjeet was handed over to his family, the sources added.
