Khandu to move in to new official residence
Itanagar (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu has resolved to give a new look to the state capital and to start with he has demolished the old CM's bungalow to construct a new one in its place.
Khandu, meanwhile, has been functioning from his own modest residence ever since he came to power some 20 months ago.
His close confidants said that after ousting party stalwart Gegong Apang from power in April last year, Khandu moved to his official bungalow, but was so put off by the condition of the building with bamboo accra walls that he immediately ordered demolition of it.
The 1749 square-metre three-storied new bungalow will have nine bed rooms and floors and staircases built with imported marbles and latest gadgets.
Khandu received Rs five crore from the Centre to raise the new building in place of the old one which was associated with memories of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and other distinguished visitors.
Determined to refurbish the image of the state capital, Khandu has also got sanction for Rs 38 crore to build a new state Assembly building and Rs 75 crore for a new civil secretariat building, work on which is expected to start soon.
Justifying the demolition of the old building, Khandu had told newsmen that the look of the state capital should be impressive so as to attract more tourists and instill confidence in investors, particularly when Arunachal Pradesh is on a take off stage with big hydro power projects lined up.
Lots of constructions are going on under the Rs 10,000 crore PM's package and the state capital is being connected three ways. While work on a greenfield airport is to be started around next year, constructions of a broad gauge rail link and a 4-lane road have just started.
Khandu said when tourists visit CM's bungalow, they should see a modern aesthetic architecture. "When they will see similar buildings like the assembly and secretariat, they will have respect for the state's capabilities," he said.
