Common and uniform structure for elections mooted

Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): Kerala Governor R S Gavai on Friday suggested a common electoral roll for the elections.

Addressing the 11th 'All India State Election Commisioners Conference' here, Mr. Gavai said a common electoral roll may be availed for elections. "The suggestion to have a common electoral roll as well as to hold simultaneous elections to Municipal bodies and Panchayati Raj Institutions as done in Kerala will considerably reduce malpractices to a large extent," he said.

A streamlining of the electoral process and the functioning of the Election Commission should be done with a view to making elections both vibrant and truly democratic, he said.

Orissa State Election Commissioner Sanjib Chandra Hota presided over the function.

Kerala State Election Commissioner P Kamalkutty also spoke at the conference attended by the Election Commission of India and the State Election Commissioners.
