Hinduja proposes economic centre
Mumbai, March 8 (PTI): Hinduja Group Chairman S P Hinduja, who has its roots in Sindh, today mooted creation of economic centres across India to attract investments from the 2.8 million strong and enterprising Sindh community.
"Economic centres attract everyone. Sindhis don't have a state of their own in India. So, if we have more financial institutions, they can bring economic growth for the country," he said, presenting a paper - "Sindhu Civilisation: Its Application in The 21st Century and Beyond" - at Mumbai University as part of its 150th year celebrations organised by the Department of Sindhi.
Hinduja later said that the economic centres were, however, in the conceptual stage.
He said Sindhis have been a business community and were the first to introduce merchant banking and they were the early money changers.
The Hinduja Group, which has interests in automobile, finance and banking among others, was founded in 1914 by Premanand Deepchand Hinduja, who hailed from Sindh -- now part of Pakistan.
On the Group's banking business, IndusInd Bank, Hinduja said: "It is the first bank that has managed to mobilise funds of non-resident Indians for the real benefit of India".
