BSNL to offer voice, cable TV, broadband on single line

New Delhi, April 8 (PTI): State-run BSNL will offer voice, cable TV and and Internet services on a single line -- triple play -- by the later half of this year, a move which will not only boost its revenues but also enable it to match private operators in providing quality offerings.

The operator hopes to generate a new revenue source, as the growth of its fixed-line revenues remains stagnant.

BSNL plans to provide Multi Service Access Network based multi-service broadband access network, for offering triple play services (voice, video, Internet services) to BSNL customers.

The network architecture and solution will be able to support services like voice, high speed internet access, IPTV on a large scale, an official of the PSU said.

When this is launched, BSNL will provide both pre-paid and post-paid broadband services, the official said, adding that the company has already issued tenders for the same for three lakh lines.

The 3-in-1 service, offering voice, broadband and cable TV on a single line is called triply play. The subscribers would be able to get all three -- voice telephony, broadband and cable TV along with video-on-demand on single telephone line.

For this BSNL will have to tie up with TV channels.

MTNL already has a similar service.

A Triple Play Service will catapult BSNL to offer many high-end value added services like Basic Internet Access Service with speed ranging from 256 kbps to 16 Mbps

It will also enable the PSU to offer TV over IP Service, which BSNL has launched in Pune on a limited basis: IPTV facilitates distribution of broadcast TV channels in digital mode on the broadband network to the customer and is converted back to a analog format in the home for reception on a standard television set.
