Sasken inks deal with EMS SATCOM

Mumbai, Oct. 5 (PTI): Sasken Communication Technologies today said it has entered into an agreement with EMS SATCOM, a unit of EMS Technologies Inc, to provide software for design of a next-generation dual-mode satellite and GSM mobile phone for Inmarsat.

This agreement would see the first-ever integration of Sasken's complete development solution - the GSM/GPRS protocol and supporting Application Framework - into a dual-mode GSM and satellite phone, the company said in a communique to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The new Inmarsat phone, to be launched in early 2009, would offer remote field and aid operations and enhance the communication reach of private and government agencies across remote corners of the world, the firm said.

The company's key contribution to the development of the handset would be in the software which controls communication between the handset and the base stations or satellites and in the application middleware and user interface, Sasken said.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Sasken, taking the company's market-proven modular, scaleable approach and now extending it to this new domain of satellite communications," Sasken Communications' Senior Vice President (Products), Edwin Moses said.

The company, however, refused to divulge the financial details of the deal.

International Maritime Satellite Organisation or Inmarsat operates a constellation of geo-stationary satellites designed to extend phone, fax and data communication to all over the world.
