    HCL launches environment-friendly desktops

New Delhi, (PTI): IT company, HCL Infosystems Ltd., Tuesday introduced a new range of environment-friendly desktops.

The new desktops -- 'HCL eSafe' are compliant with Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive as they have negligible or zero quantities of hazardous materials like lead, cadmium and mercury and are therefore cleaner and easily recyclable.

The company also announced the unification of its various environment protection initiatives under the comprehensiveness 'HCL eSafe' programme.

By the end of this calendar year, we will launch all our desktops and notebooks with RoHS compliance, HCL Infosystem Ltd., Executive vice-president, George Paul, told reporters here.

The desktops have been priced in the range of Rs 15,000 to Rs 60,000, based on the configurations and peripherals, he added.

The company earlier this year had launched RoHs-complaint notebooks in the price ranges of Rs 25,000 - Rs 100,000.

Asked about the price changed in the computers due to the use of silver components instead of lead and cadmium, he said, "due to this there is a marginal increase in the cost price which is absorbed by company itself, there will be no burden on the customers."

Talking on the company's HCL eSafe programme he said, "This programme is a initiative to protect the environment, health and safety of all our stakeholders. The customers can submit their used mobiles, electronic gadgets, computers in the company's 200 collection centres across the country."

The company has tied up with the Chennai-based, government-approved recycling plant, Trishiraya, where all the collected products are recycled, Paul added.
