    CII, FICCI support nuke deal

New Delhi (PTI): A day ahead of the crucial trust vote in Parliament, leading industry chambers on Monday came out in support of the Indo-US nuclear deal saying it was a necessary reform the country needed for its energy security.

"The Indo-US nuclear deal would open the entire nuclear suppliers to India, which is very necessary. We look at this as an necessary reform that the country needs in the field of energy security," CII said in a statement.

The energy requirements of India are well known. This (the nuclear deal) is a critical element in the growth and development of the country, it added.

Expressing hope that the deal would go through, it said, "Our experience has shown that the respective political ideologies the reform process has been unidirectional.

Echoing similar sentiments FICCI gave it support to the government and disagreed with the notion that the government was not focusing on containing inflation and rather concentrated on the Indo-US nuclear deal.

"Over the last two years the government and the RBI have taken several steps to rein in inflation and inflationary expectations," it said.

FICCI further said now that the government does not have the Left support, if it passes the floor test than it must move ahead and undertake the crucial reform measure that could not be acted upon due to dissension from the Left parties.

PSU disinvestment, FDI in retail, raising FDI cap in insurance, labour laws, banking and pension sector reforms were areas that needed to be carried through, the chamber said.
