Sonika goes down in trials; fails to get Commonwealth berth
New Delhi, June. 9 (PTI): Woman grappler Sonika Kaliraman's quest for a place in the upcoming Commonwealth Championships team ended in heartbreak on Saturday as she lost to Meenakshi in the re-organised trials held by the Wrestling Federation of India at court orders.
Sonika had moved a lower court against WFI's decision to keep her out of the earlier trials and got a verdict in her favour.
But at Saturday's trials for the 72-kg category, she lost 5-3 to Meenakshi, who was selected earlier for the tournament to be held in Canada starting June 15.
Sonika won her first bout against Gurshan Kaur while Meenakshi also won against Kavita. But in the final bout, Sonika went down to Meenakshi.
"Sonika lost to Meenakshi in the trials. Our position stands vindicated after Saturday's trials," WFI President G S Mandher said.
Sonika, a gold medallist in the 72kg category at the recent National Games in Guwahati, had alleged that WFI had unfairly denied her a chance to participate in the trials and had filed a case in court.
The WFI, however, had argued that she was not allowed to participate because she had left midway from a training camp last month after picking up a hamstring injury and developing fever.
