China's Guangzhou to host largest Asian Games: OCA
MACAO (Xinhua): The 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, will be the largest Asian Games ever staged, said Husain Al-Musallam, director general of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), here on Tuesday.
According to the organizing committee, the Guangzhou will see athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions competing in a record 42 sports. Up to 14,000 athletes and officials will participate in the Games which will introduce the sports of cricket, dance sport, dragon boat, roller sport and Weiqi for the first time.
"The 16th Asian Games aims to promote cooperation in the fields of sports, economy and culture among Asian countries and regions and will enhance their mutual trust and friendship." said Al- Musallam.
Deputy secretary general of Guangzhou Asian Games organizing committee (GAGOC) Gu Shiyang said Guangzhou had finished preliminary constructions and further preparation will be done soon.
"With just over 1,000 days to go before the opening ceremony of the Games, we are in overdrive preparing for the event." said Gu.
