Kumble, Prasad see Srinath's shadow in Ishant

Perth (PTI): Ishant Sharma may not have ended with a bagful of wickets in the third Test but India captain Anil Kumble and bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad have already started seeing Javagal Srinath's shadow in the lanky Delhi pacer.

The rookie speedster was impressive in both the innings and he twice removed Australian captain Ricky Ponting to earn crucial breakthroughs for his team, prompting Kumble to liken him to India's retired pace spearhead Srinath.

"He was brilliant. He looks like what Srinath was in his early days. He showed a great attitude," Kumble said.

Prasad, who often shared the new ball with Srinath, had similar views on Ishant.

"They are quite similar. I mean both are tall, lanky pacers with high-arm action. Like Srinath, Ishant too brings the ball back into the right-hander," Prasad said.

"And like Srinath, he too gets a lot of bounce because of his height and action," he said.

Prasad was happy with the performance of other bowlers as well.

"It was a difficult job in the absence of Zaheer (Khan). He has been in tremendous form over the last few months and without him (missing action owing to injury), it was quite a task.

"But RP (Singh) and Ishant then took up the responsibility and then Irfan (Pathan) came back and did well with both the ball and the bat," he said.

"I think, overall, the entire attack -- three pacers and Anil himself -- did a great job here," Prasad added.

Apart from bowling, Prasad was also happy to see the bowlers show some guts with the bat as well.

"It was great to see them chip in with the bat as well. In Sydney, Harbhajan (Singh) contributed with the bat and here you saw Irfan doing a great job and RP also scoring some runs.

"As tailenders, they just hung around with the bat and helped build useful partnerships," he said.

Though most expected Australia to singe India with an all-pace attack on the WACA track, Prasad felt in the end his wards proved better because they stuck to the basics.

"We were not unduly worried about the track or the opponents. We like doing our job and concentrate on our strength. As Anil keeps saying, we got to play the game our Indian way.

"It was a great performance and the boys stuck to basics," he said.
