Karachi (PTI): Pakistan cricket authorities have nominated their former Test captain and Board Chief Executive Majid Jahangir Khan to head the influential International Cricket Council's Cricket Committee after the resignation of Sunil Gavaskar of India.

Gavaskar stepped down as the chairman of the Committee after being asked by the ICC to choose between his ICC posting and his wide ranging media commitments which they described as a conflict of interest.

Gavaskar went for his media commitments after a long stint at the head of the committee.

A senior PCB official said they had sent in their nomination and given the name of Majid Khan.

"He has previous experience of top level cricket administration and he has worked on several ICC committees and assignments," the official said.

Majid's name was also pushed forward last year when the elections for the high-profile post were held but Gavaskar retained his position despite resistance from Pakistan and some other countries.

Majid, who played 63 Tests and 23 One-Day Internationals, had a no-nonsense approach as administrator when he was PCB Chief Executive before stepping down in 1999.

Sources said the PCB had already started to lobby and garner support for Majid's election as the Committee chairman although the other Test playing nations would also be submitting their nominations.
