A determined Dola Banerjee vows to perform
Kolkata (PTI): Dola Banerjee is down but certainly not out.
The first Indian woman archer to make the Olympics cut (Athens, 2004), Dola faces an uphill task this time.
She is country's numero uno archer but she won't represent the nation in the individual event at Olympics as the Kolkata archers 50th place finish at Archery World Championship was not enough to earn a berth in the 2008 extravaganza.
L Bombayla Devi (Railways) made the Beijing cut for the women's recurve individual event after she finished 32nd in the same Championship which was held in Leipzig, Germany in July 2007.
Bombayla's performance was also enough for her to qualify for the women's recurve team.
So Dola now has to compete among seven others Reena Kumari (both Railways), Punya Prabha and Sushma (both UP), V. Pranitha, Rimil Biruli and Pratima Boro (all Steel Plant) and Chekrovolu Swuro (Nagaland) for the two remaining slots of the team event in the selection trials slated for four days (June 25-26 and June 28-29) at SAI in Kolkata.
A determined Dola however said she was up for the challenge and ready to prove herself at the trials.
"It happens for every sportsperson when you go up and down. When you are out of form, people might have written you off but you have to accept it, take it in your strides and battle it out to emerge winner despite all odds. That's the test of a sportpersons character," Dola told PTI.
