Subroto Cup to kick off from Sept 2 with new format

New Delhi (PTI): Around 2000 school teams, which would compete in the 49th Subroto football tournament, will have to go through preliminary rounds this year as the organisers have changed the format of the event, kicking off next week from here.

The tournament, beginning on September 2, will be held in two age groups -- sub-junior under-14 and juniors under-17 -- and will also have teams from Switzerland, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

"We have changed the format a bit this time. We have asked the schools to host the prelims, which we have introduced this time.

"Also we would like to request the state governments to host a school level tournament so that instead of the best school from the states, we can have best team competing in the tournament," said Air Marshall Nirmal Verma.

The junior category will have 32 teams in the main round while the sub-junior category will have 28 teams competing with each other for the title.

The winners of the junior category will get a prize money of Rs 1 lakh, while the runner-up will get Rs 60,000.

The best player and the most promising player of the tournament will be awarded a scooter along with a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each.

"A U-14 club team, called FC Kusnacht from Switzerland will be participating in the tournament," said Verma.
