Lyngkhoi, Shastri Devi win Indian Open Marathon

New Delhi (PTI): Binning Lyngkhoi of Maharashtra gave a boost to his 2010 Commonwealth Games dream winning the men's title of the Mawana Sugars Indian Open Marathon, while Uttar Pradesh's Shastri Devi emerged fastest among women here on Sunday.

Lyngkhoi, undergoing training in the Army Sports Institute in Pune, covered the 42.197 km distance in 2:17:58 hrs, followed by Bipul Saharia (2:24:55) of Andhra Pradesh and Surender Kumar (2:25:11) of Uttar Pradesh.

Among women, Shastri Devi clocked 2:53:22 hrs to bag the title. Sukanya Mall (3:07:27) of UP emerged second and statemate Indresh Dhiraj (3:09:20) third.

"I will be competing in 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games marathon and right now, I am preparing for the event. Training in the Army Sports Institute has helped me a lot to improve my stamina," Lyngkhoi said after the race.

In line with the last edition, the organisers decided to have the same route for the event, which is also the proposed route for the marathon event in 2010 Commonwealth Games, having Guru Harkrishan Public School as the starting point.

In 21.097-km half marathon, Maharashtra's Irappa D Ikki won the race in men's category clocking 1:09:12 hrs, while Sudha Singh (1:22:10) perched on the first place among women.

The winners in both the men's and women's category received an equal prize money -- Rs 2,00,000 each for the full marathon and Rs 25,000 each for the half marathon.

Over 400 runners from all walks of life, including students of Delhi University, Sports Control Board of Delhi Police, Railways, paramilitary forces and corporate houses participated in the event.
