Seven-member Indian team for Junior World Boxing Championships
New Delhi (PTI): India will have a seven-strong presence at the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in the Armenian city of Yerevan, where a record-breaking 283 boxers from 47 countries will compete for the top honours from May 23 to 30.
India had put up its best ever show at the event by winning a couple of gold medals and a silver in the last edition held in 2007.
Fly weight pugilist Vipin Kumar, who has now graduated to senior level after winning a bronze medal at last year's National Championship, also won the 'Best Boxer' trophy in 2007 edition held in Baku, Azerbaijan which was a first for an Indian boxer.
Vikas Yadav (48kg) had won the other gold for India, while Umesh Yadav (46kg) had brought home a silver.
The team for this edition comprises all new faces with the exception of Shiva Thapa (52kg), who had won a gold medal at last year's Haider Aliyev Cup tournament -- a prestigious junior event.
"It's a rookie team but it would better the 2007 performance. I am especially confident about Shiva doing well," said coach M S Dhaka, who was at the helm even the last time around.
