Anti-Fanaa protestor dies of burns injuries

Ahmedabad, June. 20 (PTI): Nearly ten days after he set himself on fire to protest the screening of Aamir Khan's film "Fanaa" at a theatre in Gujarat, Pravin Joshi today succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Jamnagar.

Joshi died at 12.30 pm at the Guru Govindsinh Hospital, sources said.

On June 11, Joshi had poured kerosene and set himself on fire at a toilet of Ambar theatre in Jamnagar, the only cinema hall in Gujarat that was showing the film.

Distributors in the state had decided not to release "Fanaa" last month following protests by BJP activists over Aamir's statement demanding the rehabilitation of people affected by the Sardar Sarovar Dam project.

In a statement made to the police after his immolation bid, Joshi had said he had acted for "the cause of Narmada" and to "make the people of Gujarat aware about the enemies of the dam project".

Joshi, who was not affiliated to any political party or social organisation, had told the police that he was disturbed by the screening of "Fanna" in Jamnagar and decided to do something to "wake up" the people of Gujarat.

The film was withdrawn by Amber theatre on June 12.

Some distributors have suggested that Aamir should "apologise" for his comments on the Narmada Dam issue, but the star has refused to do so.
