Fusion music has great future: Ravi Shankar
Kolkata (PTI): Fusion music has a great future and it is getting stronger in India and worldwide, 87-year-old eminent musician Pandit Ravi Shankar said on Thursday.
"This is a kind of thing which is bound to happen and will continue to happen here and elsewhere in the world," the legendary sitarist, who took Indian music to the West, said at a press conference prior to his performance with daughter Anoushka at Calcutta Club's centenary programme on Saturday. "I do feel that love for classical music -- vocal and instrumental -- in this city (Kolkata) is very much more than any other city that I know of," the legendary sitarist, who arrived here from the US after recovering from a viral pneumonia attack, said.
Recollecting his association with music giants in his 'favourite city', he said he was enchanted by the classical-based songs of S D Burman, Bhismadev Chattopadhyay and Himangshu Dutta. "Those were the giant composers who impressed me," he said, giving a brief account of his close links with celebrated singers and composers Hemant Kumar and Salil Choudhury.
