    Chalachitra film festival to begin on Aug. 1

    Thiruvananthapuram (PTI): Fortysix films from 24 countries would be screened at the 13th Thiruvananthapuram International Film Festival (TIFF) beginning here on August 1.

    G Rajmohan, President of Chalachithra Film Society, the organisers of the event, told reporters here that the films to be screened included the current works of internationally renowned film-makers Andrzez Wajda (Katyn/Poland), Istvan Szabo (Relatives/Hungary) and Martin Scorsese (Departed/USA).

    Israeli film-maker Dan Wolman's `Tied Hands' (2007) would be the inaugural film of the festival. Wolman's eight feature films would be part of the retrospective section of the festival.

    Wolman would be the chief guest at the inaugural of TIFF, Rajmohan said.

    The festival would come to a close with the screening of Andrzej Wajda's latest film `Katyn' on Aug 7. Five Sri Lankan films commemorating the 60th year of Sri Lankan cinema would be screened during the festival.

    Asian cinema will have seven films from six countries and seven more films would be screened in the Oscar and Golden Globe award package.

    Kerala-born Manoj Night Shyamalan's new Hollywood film `The Happening' will be a major attraction at the festival which would also screen Adoor Gopalakrishnan's latest movie `Naalu Pennungal' (Four Women).
