Banegal's 'Welcome to Sajjanpur' at London film festival

Mumbai (PTI): Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal's upcoming film "Welcome to Sajjanpur", a satirical take on life in contemporary rural India, will have two screenings at the prestigious London Film Festival next month.

The film, that will be released in India on September 19, would feature in the competition section of world cinema and mark its UK and European premiere.

Produced by UTV SpotBoy, 'Welcome to Sajjanpur' will be screened on October 25 at 12.45 pm at OWE1 and on October 26 at 16.45 pm at Waterman's Art Centre. The London Film Festival would be held from October 15 to 30.

The film revolves around Mahadev, one of the few educated young men from Sajjanpur. Gifted with a flair for words, his ambition is to be a novelist but circumstances demand that he eke out a living by writing letters. So, he sits next to the post office and writes letters for all and sundry.

Mahadev's persuasive and powerful letter-writing makes him popular with the largely illiterate population of the town. Soon, he uses his talent to manipulate people with amusing and sometimes not so amusing results.

The film is an entertaining, musical and comic interpretation of characters and events that are at once hilarious and poignant, Benegal said.
